Avenches Opera Festival
Every summer, the Roman arenas in Avenches vibrate to the sounds of the Opera Festival which attracts several thousand spectators, who have come to enjoy high-quality artistic performances.
In the unique setting of the Roman amphitheatre, the greatest opera works, such as Nabucco, Carmen, Aida, Rigoletto, Tosca, La Traviata or Don Giovanni, have been presented to an audience from all over the country. Singers of international reputation, lavish sets, as well as stagings geared to this unique site in Switzerland, have propelled the Opera Festival to the top of major opera events in Europe.
The Roman arenas were built in the first century A.D. by Emperor Vespasian, when Aventicum was a Roman colony with a population of 20,000. This is the reason why there were monumental buildings, such as the amphitheatre, the theatre, the forum or the surrounding city wall.
