Located at the foot of the Vaudois Alps, the Bex salt mines receive many visitors each year seeking a unique Swiss experience, ideal for families. Here, you can board the miners’ train and travel deep into the mountain to search for this white gold.
Discovered in the 15th century, the Bex salt mines are now a vast underground labyrinth of tunnels, some of which are open to the public introducing them to the world of salt deep under the Swiss Alps.
The visit starts in a vast old reservoir created in 1826 where an exhibition and documentary tell the story of three centuries of mining. Visitors then board a little train and travel deep into the tunnels, where the noise of the train gives way to the mystical silence of the underground corridors. Visitors can take a 1-hour walk through the maze of tunnels and learn all about the extraction techniques.
Largement consommé en Suisse, le sel des Alpes de Bex est en vente dans la boutique des mines. On le trouve sous sa forme alimentaire, ainsi que dans une gamme cosmétique naturelle.
Widely used in Switzerland, Alpes de Bex salt can be purchased in the mine shop, as a cooking salt and in a range of natural cosmetics.
