Visas & entry formalities

Switzerland is part of the Schengen area like 25 other European countries that apply the same entry formalities.

Depending on their nationality, visitors to the canton of Vaud travel freely in Switzerland and in the 25 other European countries of the Schengen area, provided they have a valid travel document and do not exceed a length of stay of 3 months.

Since its entry into the Schengen Area, Switzerland has applied the same entry formalities as the European countries. Visitors, who hold a valid travel document (passport and/or identity card, depending on nationality) can travel freely in the 26 countries of this area for a period not exceeding 90 days. The criteria regarding the validity of a travel document vary in each country.

A visa is required for stays of more than 90 days, both in Switzerland and in all the other countries of the Schengen Area. For all additional information, please check the links below or contact the nearest Consulate General of Switzerland.
