Self-service bicycles are the environment-friendly means of transport set up in some cities of the Lake Geneva Region and Chablais. The initiative has proved to be a hit.
Has your car broken down? Do you feel like stretching your legs? Do you want to be more environment-friendly? Would you like to see the city from a different angle? Then the solution lies in three little words: rent a bike.
Dreamed up by PubliBike, the system allows one to borrow a bike from self-service stations running around the clock. In the Lausanne-Morges, Riviera and Chablais regions, bikes can be borrowed with an annual season ticket or a rail day pass.
Launched in 2009 in Lausanne, the initiative took off to a flying start. To the point where other towns – Renens, Morges, Vevey, La Tour-dePeilz, Yverdon-les-Bains and Aigle– have adopted it so that their residents, commuters and tourists can also benefit from it.
To rent a bike for a day, just go to one of the partner sales outlets near the railway stations (day pass covering 24 hours). The list of sales outlets and the order form for annual season tickets are available on www.publibike.ch. When you’re finished with the bike, you can leave it at another station.
