Agricultural machines museum, Chiblins Mill
The mill at Chiblins – now rebaptised Agricultural Machine Museum - houses a collection of agricultural machines. These machines are still used to harvest wheat the old-fashioned way.
In mid-August every other year, the Agricultural Machine Museum organises wheat harvesting in the old-fashioned way. This is the occasion to bring out the agricultural tools from the Chiblins Mill, where they are exhibited.
Reaping is done with the sickle, the scythe, a horse-drawn harvester, a tractor-drawn harvester, a self-binder and, finally, a combine harvester.
Visitors of the 21st century are invited to thresh the grain with a flail or to winnow the wheat at the mill. For the remainder of the year, these agricultural tools are exhibited at the museum, which is open from April to September under the direction of the Historical Centre of Agriculture.
The Agricultural Machine Museum chose the Chiblins Mill, which was closed down in 1986. This wheat mill on the bank of River Asse was already mentioned in 970 A.D. The current museum edifice was built in 1850-54 after a fire had destroyed the original buildings.
