Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Lake Geneva Region had some 70 living traditions listed according to the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage criteria in 2010 and 2011. Tales and legends, Lake Geneva Region patois, Brandons (carnivals), traditional crafts and art are all elements included in the list of intangible cultural heritage and constitute a rich and multi-faceted portrait.

These living traditions are classified according to five categories:

  • Oral traditions (tales and legends, stories of Oin-Oin, patois of the Lake Geneva Region, customary laws)
  • The performing arts (choral practice, vintners' festival, festivals, brass bands, costumes and dances) • Social practices (brandons, abbeys, grape harvest festival, Lausanne watchman, meals from the Lake Geneva Region
  • Know-how and practice related to nature and the universe (limping messenger, going up to the mountain pastures, coming down from the mountain pastures, resonance wood)
  • Traditional crafts (cut-outs, tavillons [shingles], music boxes and automata, low walls, watchmaking)
