The Lake Geneva Region contains the highest concentration of international and non-governmental organisations in the world. International Olympic Committee, Sport Federations, and environment organisations have set up their base in the Lake Geneva Region. Lausanne, the capital of the Lake Geneva Region (Vaud), is also the capital of Olympism and sports: since 1915, it has been the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as well as of 25 international sport federations and 21 international sport-related organisms, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Lausanne also inaugurated the House of International Sport (HIS) in 2006: a campus consisting of three buildings covering an area of 4,300 square metres devoted to international sport. Located close to the IOC, it is the headquarters of some twenty federations and sport organisms, as well as a dozen companies active in the field of sports.
Still in the area of sports, the Canton of Vaud accommodates the Union of European Football Associations in Nyon and the International Cyclist Union in Aigle. The Lake Geneva Region is also the headquarters of the ecological organisations WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), in Gland.
