Politics & Institutions

Political stability and an attractive fiscal policy have won over a good number of multinational companies and celebrities who have established themselves in the Lake Geneva Region (canton of Vaud).

Freed from the Bernese by Napoleon in 1798, the canton of Vaud joined the Helvetic Confederation in 1803.

As to politics, the canton of Vaud’s executive power is exercised by the State Council. Its seven members, elected by the people, head seven departments. The legislative, headed by the Grand Council, is made up of 150 deputies elected by proportional ballot. Lastly the canton of Vaud currently has 20 representatives on the federal level (18 at the National Council and 2 at the Council of States).

The Lake Geneva Region (canton of Vaud) comprises 10 districts and 375 communes; Rivaz, the smallest with its 32 hectares, lies on the shores of Lake Geneva, and Château-d’Oex, the largest, extends over 11,376 hectares.
