Avenches

Located in the very north of the canton of Vaud and close to the canton of Fribourg, Avenches honours its past as a Swiss capital. Its alleys, Roman museum and shores of Lake Morat are required places of visit, while the concerts performed in the Roman arenas are part of the not-to-be-missed events.

The Romans made Avenches the capital of Roman Helvetia. Two thousand years later, the monumental arenas that were built at the beginning of our era still host colourful performances. The spectators rushing to the amphitheatre want to admire the artists of Rock Oz'Arènes and the military bands of Avenches Tattoo, who have now replaced beasts and gladiators. Ideally located on the shores of Lake Morat and bordering the vineyard of Vully, the town offers its visitors a range of gastronomic and local products.
It is difficult to resist taking a stroll or a bike ride through the charming vineyard paths near Avenches. On the way, excursionists will enjoy a gourmet break at one of the vintners’ cellars or in a restaurant. Not to be missed: the famous Vully cream cake, which is either sweet or savoury.
