Lavaux grape varieties

Chasselas, the emblematic grape variety of the Canton of Vaud, feels right at home in Lavaux UNESCO. This white variety, which produces a dry wine perfect for an aperitif, covers nearly three-quarters of the vineyard. However, the wide range of terroirs in Lavaux give it a different flavour depending on where it is grown. It is believed to come from Egypt or France, but Chasselas developed its biodiversity in the Lemanic Arc. A visit to the Rivaz World Chasselas Conservatory will banish the doubts of any sceptics.

Apart from Chasselas, around 30 other varieties are grown in Lavaux, including the white specialities such as Gewürztraminer or Pinot Gris, and of course red grape varieties. Among the most popular in Switzerland are Pinot Noir, Gamay, Gamaret and Garanoir. Older varieties, such as Black Mondeuse and the Plant Robert, once widespread Lavaux, were almost extinct before the wine growers ensured their resurgence.
