Still consumed in Swiss households, alpine salt is one of the region’s treasures. This trail takes children and adults on a discovery of the first salt water spring discovered in Switzerland more than five centuries ago.
At the foot of the Vaudois Alps, the Salt Trail is an easy 13 km walk. Accessible all year round and for the whole family, the full walk to the Bévieux saltworks takes 3 ½ hours but it can be split into shorter sections.
The route follows an old larch wood “saumoduc” pipe which used to take the salt water from its source to the saltworks. Nowadays, the walk passes by forests, fields, villages and a river, with information provided by the little salt cellar, Salsita, on information boards dotted along the route. There’s a special section for children with stories, things to make or tunes to hum while walking.
This fun, informative and rural trail is a nature excursion not to be missed!
