In keeping with the times, the GoldenPass line combines the comfort of a sustainable means of transport with the enticement of a panoramic trip.
Both a means of transport and tourist attraction, the mythical GoldenPass train connects Montreux to Lucerne via Château-d'Oex and Interlaken. On board a standard, panoramic or Belle-Epoque car, you will cherish the memory of this trip during your stay in Switzerland!
Trains are surely the most pleasant and sustainable means of transport to explore Switzerland and appreciate its picture-postcard scenery. In the spirit of our time, the region of Montreux Riviera has a rich panoramic transport offer to dazzle visitors! Departing from Montreux, the GoldenPass line travels to Lucerne on the shores of Lake Lucerne, passing by Château-d'Oex and Interlaken during a 5-hour journey through Switzerland. To make this delightful moment last even longer, you can get special offers and plan your journey over 5 or 7 days mostly with the tourist transport network of the canton of Vaud and the Regional Pass. At the end of 2020, the GoldenPass Express will offer a direct connection between Montreux and Interlaken. This route currently runs via Zweisimmen (BE), where you need to change trains due to the two different track sizes. Thanks to a revolutionary innovation, new cars with variable wheel spacing will soon enable the train to pass from metric to standard tracks within just a few seconds!
Linking Lake Geneva to the Alpine mountains in a short time, the mythical railway line has you reach for the sky while offering breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and the Lavaux UNESCO vineyards. Apart from the comfortable standard cars, the company also offers panoramic cars with large windows to sublimate your experience. Behold the natural treasures of the canton of Vaud in all seasons: the blue reflections of Lake Geneva, the verdant green meadows in spring, the white carpet of narcissi in summer, the orangey hues of the terraced vineyards of Lavaux UNESCO in autumn, the powdery white on the firs and the snow-capped peaks in winter. The architectural heritage is certainly worth a visit: buildings that are classified historical monuments and beautiful chalets made from timber. In summer and winter, the train stops at the starting point of many excursions crossing Pays-d'Enhaut and the Gruyère-Pays-d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park.
Throughout the year, the GoldenPass Classic immerses you in the romantic and chic Belle-Epoque atmosphere with its cars dating from the beginning of the 20th century and reminiscent of the Orient Express. This trip in a train and in time takes you from Montreux to Zweisimmen, in the canton of Berne, via Château-d'Oex and Gstaad, with the possibility to dine on board. Gourmet trips are also highly appreciated: the Chocolate Train in summer and the Cheese Train in winter take you to the source of these typically Swiss products. As a long-standing cultural event in July, the Montreux Jazz Festival offers a train ride with the GoldenPass Line, called GoldenPass New Orleans Jazz Train for the occasion, where you can enjoy an unforgettable concert.
Funicular railway, train or cogwheel train: you’re spoilt for choice in Montreux Riviera!
Boarding a MOB (Montreux-Oberland Bernois) or a MVR (Montreux-Vevey-Riviera) train also means getting acquainted with the Swiss railway history. Today, both form part of the GoldenPass Line and are two gems of the Swiss Alpine transport industry of the beginning of the 20th century. Both offer you an efficient network of panoramic trains that combine the charm of the Belle Epoque with modern comfort.
Every hour, an enchanting cogwheel train departs from Montreux to take you to Rochers de Naye in 55 minutes. This peak at 2,042 m above sea level appeals especially to fans of nature. Cogwheel trains, which are typical of Swiss mountain rail transport, have a sprocket-wheel in the middle of the track to help them climb the slopes. The Vevey-Les Pleiades (40 min) Star Train also features cogwheels on some sections. They enable the train to climb a slope of 1,000 m every hour, both in winter and summer, to reach the sport resort. After a bucolic journey, ski fans can then explore the ski runs at Rochers-de-Naye, Pleiades and Les Avants at their hearts’ content.
Funicular railways are a little like trams. They take you to emblematic villages that are the departure point of many hikes. Put into service in 1910 and recently renovated, the connecting line between Les Avants and Sonloup (6 min.) has retained its period cars and machinery. The journey from Vevey to Mont-Pèlerin (11 min.) takes you closer to one of the highlights of the Riviera: the panoramic lift open from Easter to November. Only an hour’s walk away, this lovely walking destination will take you 65 m above ground to offer you a spectacular 360° view!
