Horse Museum
The Musée du Cheval was opened in the imposing original 18th century barn at La Sarraz Castle in 1982.
The museum is the only one in Switzerland dedicated to the horse and is divided into several themes:
- art
- equine veterinary medicine
- the horse in the history of agriculture
- the horse in the army
- sport
- racing - games
- leisure
This rich collection includes some unusual historical pieces including the Grimsel mail coach which was built in 1895 and ran from Meiringen to Gletsch until 1922. Jean-Abram Noverraz, Napoleon Bonaparte’s Vaudois servant, left the gifts he received from the emperor who was subsequently exiled to Saint Helena on Vaudois soil. These included three French style saddles, three bridles decorated with silver and four hunting rifles which were for Napoleon’s personal use.
Artists, painters, sculptors and comic strip illustrators are invited each month for an exhibition and sale.
The museum also offers conferences, training courses, book signings and all other activities related to the equestrian world.

La Sarraz Castle
From its construction until it was turned into a museum, La Sarraz Castle has always belonged to the barons of La Sarraz, unlike the majority of castles that pass from hand to hand. The fact that it still looks like a family home, decorated with furniture and works of art acquired over centuries, makes it a fascinating place to visit.
The interior expresses the ambiance and taste of generations of a patrician family. Precious furniture, silverware and rare china testify to a sophisticated dining style. These historic rooms can be rented for receptions, celebrations, balls and weddings.
In 1982, equestrian enthusiasts opened the Musée du Cheval in this historic setting. The collection includes Napoleon 1st’s saddles, the Grimsel mail coach and sculptures of horses, along with a presentation of the work of the farrier or veterinarian.

The gardens of Château Vullierens
The Château of Vullierens Gardens near Morges are the most delightful setting for nature excursions, offering visitors a stunning walk through irises, lilies, roses and ancient trees.
Open every year from April to October. During the iris flowering season – from May to mid-June – the garden is a riot of colour with more than 50,000 flowers representing more than 400 varieties.
A collection of over 90 contemporary sculptures, growing every year, enchants visitors and completes this magical place.
Art in the gardens...
The arrival of art in the gardens of the Château de Vullierens coincides with the marriage of the current owner to Dorianna Destenay, a painter. It was she who inspired and initiated the sculpture collection, particularly following her meeting with Manuel Torres.
Over the years, the collection has grown and more than 90 contemporary and monumental sculptures are currently on display in the Gardens, created by Swiss and international artists - Beverly Pepper, Alan Jones, Gillian White, Laura Ford, Dorothy Cross, Christian Lapie, Etienne Krahenbuhl, Manuel Torres, Pol Quadrens, Manuel Carbonnel, Mireille Fulpius, Carles Valverde, Herbert Mehler, Werner Pokorny, Davide Rivalta, etc. Every year new pieces are to be discovered.
...and a bouquet of artists in the Castle's outbuildings
Some creations deserve other attentions. That of a quiet place protected from the elements. Each year the Châtelain provides artists and visitors with a three-storey space in the outbuildings of the Château.

Bread and Wheat Museum
15 km from Lausanne, Echallens is the main town of the Gros-de-Vaud region, sometimes called the “breadbasket of Switzerland” due to its prolific grain fields. In the centre of this little town, the Maison du Blé et du Pain tells the story of this grain production.
At the entrance, there’s a bakery known far and wide serving the specialities of the region. Its open bakehouse, with a view of the bakers at work, is the start of the tour of the museum (closed for an indefinite period), which continues with a permanent collection telling the story of grain farming and bread-making. The friendly little mascot, “Ti’Grain”, accompanies the children on their visit.
For those who want to stay longer, there’s the temporary annual exhibition to see, a chance to participate in making a tresse [plaited loaf] (booking required) or set off on the Chemin des Blés marked trail.

The Chemin des Blés
Starting in Echallens, about 15 kilometres from Lausanne, the Chemin des Blés trail takes you through 38 villages until you reach Granges-Marnand.
Whether on foot or by bike, this 100 km marked trail takes several days and covers nine themed sites presenting the work carried out by man and beast, and the farming or natural environment. Subjects and activities include: water, essential for life and the farming economy; paths guiding the traveller through the course of history; the animals of our fields or forests; orchards, previously a source of protection and wealth for the village; the history of the soil and stone; rural architecture in its environment; the different facets of wheat; the Gallo-roman millstone quarry and the stories of the chateaux.
All along the trail, you can enjoy a whole host of agritourism attractions and for a well-deserved rest, there are farm teas, restaurants or fixed price lunches and sleeping on the straw or in gites to refresh the hungry and weary travellers.

Bois des Brigands (The highwaymen’s wood)
With its charming forest cabin of yesteryear and the numerous walking paths, it is a forest which is greatly appreciated by the village population and the surrounding district.
The highwaymen concept has been continued as follows: an overall itinerary of 3 circular routes in the form of a «pain de coucou» or three leafed clover, the centre of which is the forest cabin called «Repaire». Each circle (leaf) can be enjoyed by a variety of people such as ramblers, families, school outings and groups.
Not to miss: «Le Donjon», situated near the edge of the forest on the east side of the Commounaille woods. This wooden tower is 16m high and offers visitors an exceptional view over the Alps.
Open all year round. Free entry.

Vuissens Golf Club
Opened in 2002, the Vuissens Golf Club is a new course which has quickly gained a reputation for itself. Jeremy Pern, the well-known golf course architect, has skilfully integrated it into its surroundings, while enhancing the Petite-Glâne River, which peacefully winds its way through the greenery. The result is a superb 6,179 m 18-hole par 72 course, which is ideal for experienced players and novices. Open to visitors during the week and at weekends, the golf course has an independent academy which offers lessons to juniors and beginners. A whole range of practice facilities is available: two putting greens, one pitching green, a covered practice area, practice mats and a grass practice area. An integral part of Vuissens Golf Club, the 13th century castle accommodates the Club House with terrace, changing rooms and a renowned restaurant.

Historical tour of Moudon
The architectural, historical and cultural values of Moudon don't need to be proven. In order to emphasize these values, the municipality, the association of development, the town guides and the organization Moudon Région Tourisme produced a complete historical tour in our town. This accentuation of Moudon is important for guests who initially had not planned a guided tour or who have no occasion to attend a guided tour on the first Saturday of the month from May to October. In this way, with this project, Moudon could set up an essential historical and touristic extension for the guests as well as for the inhabitants.
For this purpose, about thirty explanatory easy to recognize brown plates of 29 x 29 cm are fixed on the most important buildings of the town. You will also find columns with descriptions of specific archeological sites in the upper part of the historic centre (Musée du Vieux-Moudon).
A logo (on the first page) represents the marker of this project. Signposts on the most important crossroads enable each guest to continue his tour in his own rhythm. The English version of the descriptions on buildings and signposts are displayed on folders distributed by the Tourist Office in town.

Upper town of Moudon
The small market town of Moudon sits in the curves of the river Broye and is lulled by the cool waters of the river Mérine as it flows below the cliffs on which is perched the “Ville Haute” (high town).
The upper part of the actual “rue du Chateau” (Castle Street) is the oldest sector with its archways on the houses and the large tower, a remnant of the ruling lord’s fortress. It also shows several similarities with the town of Bern and Fribourg.
Moving southwards the rue du Chateau joins the “rue du Bourg” which runs along the ridge of a long rocky offshoot. Its still typical medieval appearance symbolised by the high outside rear walls of the houses being built as a prolongation to the sandstone cliffs on which they stand, has entitled the “Ville Haute” of Moudon to be classified as a site of national interest.

Rochefort Castle and Vieux-Moudon Museum
Family cuisine, notary offices, bourgeois living rooms, the hard work of a farmer or craftsman, pub signs and the remains of the town’s arcades: all the objects presented show what everyday life was like in the past.
Located at the very top of the upper town, Château de Rochefort dominates the town with its imposing silhouette. Its clock, which is housed in a picturesque 18th century pinnacle, structures the life of the town's inhabitants.
In the museum, a stop in front of the interactive model, which shows the appearance of Moudon at the beginning of the 15th century (scale 1:500), is mandatory. A set of lights helps visitors not only to watch the history of the development of the town but also aspects of its everyday life.
In addition to the presentation of its permanent collection, the Museum du Vieux-Moudon organises a temporary exhibition each year.

Eugène Burnand Museum
A contemporary of Hodler, Anker and Biéler, Eugène Burnand (1850-1921) established his reputation by his naturalist works. Highly acclaimed during his lifetime, his paintings received many accolades in Paris. The artist therefore enjoyed the luxury of not being dependent on commissions, making a living from his art by painting what he wanted.
Although Eugène Burnand was particularly recognised for landscape painting and depictions of country life, he also excelled as a portraitist, illustrator and engraver. He also depicted some original religious subjects.
The museum’s permanent exhibition reflects his rich and varied production, with around a hundred of the artist’s works, ranging from drawings to famous particularly impressive large-scale oil paintings such as Le Labour dans le Jorat.

Sherlock Holmes Museum
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was the creator of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and published 56 short stories and 4 novels between 1886 and 1927 in which Holmes gets to grips with the most delicate cases, always with great success.
When his son Adrian (1910-1970) came to live in Lucens in 1965, he created a museum dedicated to his father’s work including a collection of books and objects relating to Sherlock Holmes.
The museum includes a meticulous reconstruction of the living room used by Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson based on the descriptions in the stories, faithfully recreating the ambiance of this room with hundreds of authentic objects, some of them very strange. The collection also includes many objects and furniture that provided the inspiration for the Sherlock Holmes stories.
